The primary task in this lesson is for students to take a designed experiment and connect their conceptual and spatial reasoning centers in their brains by creating the graphs that will be used to display the results, and sketching a guess at what those results will look like.  Then students will explain what the various shapes mean about the variables being tested.

The predicting tool is in the Data Logging software and is basically a sketching tool where students select a color and thickness and then use the cursor to sketch the shape they predict. (This task may work better if students have actual mice to use with the laptops instead of just the touch pad on a laptop.)   

In my first attempt at this activity, I may create an outdoor activity where students to a 20 to 30 minute walk down a trail that goes in to some deeper forested areas, then back to the classroom. (I am a proponent of trying to design as many quality learning experiences as possible for kids that are out of the classroom.) I may have some kids use the temperature sensor, some do light, and others use the gas Oxygen sensor.

This could be more interesting if half the class is using one type of sensor and half is using another type of sensor. It should be done in groups of two. Processing can be done via class presentation, or via a think/pair / share where groups of two present to other groups of two what their predictions look like, then having one or two present to the whole class.
