Lesson: 20L ESR Motoring on with Degrees and Rotations

Printer-friendly version
Objectives:

This lesson describes how to use the LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 programming software to control EV3 motors with "degrees" or "rotations" and how to see the EV3 sensing its environment and responding to instructions while doing so.

1) Watch this video describing how to control both the large and medium motors with "degrees" or "rotations" rather than "time":

2) Start the video again and pause when you can see the window showing the EV3 brick and motor.

3) Get the following parts out of your bag and build the rest of the model seen in the video (note: the wire for the medium motor plugs into Port B on the EV3 Brick):

  1. Medium Motor
  2. Wire
  3. Gray Axle
  4. Wheel & Tire
  5. White pointer

You do NOT need to attach the two motors to the side of the EV3 brick as shown in the video.

4) Watch the video again, this time pausing along the way to follow the steps and download & run the program to make the motors spin.

5) Try to figure out how to change your program to make the motor run longer or in a different order.

6) Answer these questions:

How do you make a motor move for degrees?

How do you make a motor move for rotations?

What is the difference?
