the compass sensor works very much a normal compass. North is 0 or 360 degrees. East is 90 degrees. South is 180 degrees. West is 270 degrees. This is the same as it is on a normal compass it uses the earth’s magnetic field to find north so it is very important to keep it away from things that has electric magnetic fields. The one thing that is very different from a normal compass is instead of a needle rotating the case does.
