Creating Computer Chips

Submitted by Randy Steele on 22 July, 2011 - 10:46

Note: This lesson in common to both the NXT and EV3 versions of STEM Robotics 101.

This lesson delves into the microscopic world of computer chip design and manufacturing.

  • Review the [1]Creating Computer Chips Worksheet [2] worksheet with students before watching the Intel video: "Creating Chips". [3]
  • Have student take notes during video

The companion website for this video series does not have a separate section for the "Creating Chips" video, however, this "Microprocessor" page contains several links associated with the design and manufacture of computer chips.  Use the "Activity" on  these links to recap the video and explore some of the concepts inter-actively:

  • This page [4] has animations/activities about the microscopic scale of computer chips
  • This page [5] has an animation/activity about the ingredients that go into making chips
  • This page [6] has animations/activities about the layers that make up computer chips
