Classroom Resources: Aerial Robotics 101

First Days of School

If Aerial Robotics is a CTE (Career and Technical Education) class, then making this distinction with students gives a segue to establishing a classroom environment that is more consistent with the career world than other classes.

Since Robotics is a STEM class, the career environment presented here is that of a professional working in a high-tech company.

When a professional Scientist, Technologist, Engineer or Mathematician hires into a new company, the first thing they experience is an Orientation session which equips them to work within the company culture. Topics covered during Orientation usually include the company's Mission Statement, Goals and Values, Rules and ExpectationsSimilarly, at CTE STEM class may also establish its own classroom culture, reflecting that of the professional STEM career world. One such example is presented below.

Aerial Robotic CTE Frameworks

Aerial Robotics 101 is being developed and tested as a module under existing Olympia School District STEM Robotics and Video Production courses.  After testing during the inaugural year, we intend to create a separate Aerial Robotics CTE Framework for this course.  In the meantime, below are the current approved versions of the OSD STEM Robotics Frameworks, under which this Aerial Robotics content may be taught.

CTE Middle School Framework

This framework incorporates the new (2016) Washington State CTE Framework Template and incorporates the Common Core Standards for Math and English Language Arts, Next Generation Science Standards, Washington Computer Science standards.

CTE High School Framework

This framework incorporates the new (2016) Washington State CTE Framework Template and incorporates the Common Core Standards for Math and English Language Arts, Next Generation Science Standards, and Washington Computer Science standards.

Tips & Tricks

Tello Firmware Repair

If the DJI/Ryze Tello fails to power-up (LED stop blinking shortly after power-up) this may indicate that the firmware has become corrupted.  Since the Tello does not broadcast its WiFi SSID in this state, there is no way to connect to it in order to perform a firmware update.  The following technique will force the Tello to power up in a state where the one can connect to the drone and preform the update:

1) Insert a fully charged battery

2) Press and hold the power button until the green LED comes on and then goes off again (approx. 8 seconds)

3) The Tello should now be broadcasting its WiFi SSD ID - connect to this with your supported device (tablet, phone, etc.)

4) From the Tello app, go to: >>> Settings >>> More Settings >>> Firmware Version >>> Update

5) Follow procedure to install latest firmware

Tello WiFi Extender (Xiaomi Mi Wifi 2 Repeater)

To reduce video ljitter and pixalation (and extend flying range) of the Tello, a WiFi Repeater such as the Xiaomi Mi WiFi 2 Repeater may be used.  The video below walks through the set up with the Tello.
