Instruction Guide: EV3 - Autonomous Data Logging "Gyro Sensor Investigation"

In this Lesson we have 2 Primary Instruction Resources:

  • EV3 Trainer section called "Gyro Sensor Investigation" provides the video lessons.  (This lesson is not available in the free on-line version)
  • The Data Logging with Programming Blocks lesson (Data Logging Part 2) from EV3Lessons.com

Resource 1:

Sensors > Gyro Sensor Investigation > 1-6, C

The EV3 Trainer Teacher's Guide references this on pages 133-137. There is a lot of helpful information on these pages!

Behaviors > Gyro Sensor Investigation

  • Gyro Sensor Investigation 1: Overview - Video outlining the purpose, scope and steps of this scientific investigation.
  • Gyro Sensor Investigation 2: Robot Config - Contains build and setup instructions for a robot that will handle this investigation.
  • Gyro Sensor Investigation 3: Program - Video showing the students how to create an EV3-G program with embedded data logging.
  • Gyro Sensor Investigation 4: Data and Calculations - Video showing the students how to create an experiment and upload the recorded data from the EV3.
  • Gyro Sensor Investigation 5: Calculations - Video showing the students how to examine and manipulate the recorded data.
  • Gyro Sensor Investigation 6: Analysis  - Video showing the students how to analyze recorded data.
  • Gyro Sensor Investigation C: Data Logging: Interpretation - This pdf guides student through documenting their Gyro Investigation

Students should be able to answer all the review questions at the end of each step and end up with a solid command to how to create an EV-G program with an embedded data logger, and how to access and utilize the experimental results.

The "Did you Notice" sections below the review questions in Steps 3 & 4 dig deeper into the data logging file creation. The "Did you Notice" section below the review questions in Steps 5 shows student how to calculate their own conversion rate for their robot.

The "Try It" section below the review questions in Step 6 dig shows students how to access, read and interpret recorded data directly from the dataset table.

Resource 2:

The second instructional material is the PowerPoint/pdf files from EV3Lessons.  This lesson may be used as a supplement to the above resource or a replacement if the free online version of the EV3 Trainer is being used.

The PowerPoint (and pdf version) contains all the information needed for the lesson.  The EV3 set up examples are included as screen shots. Additional helpful tips are included the PowerPoint.

  1. Students should use the PowerPoint/pdf file, following the step-by-step examples and screenshots.
  2. It is important that students read the comments.

The  EV3 Software can be used as a powerful tool for scientific inquiry. Students can use it to predict, collect, analyze and manipulate data for their experiments.
