Lesson: EV3 - Sensor Exploration NGSS Lab

Overview:
The goal of this lesson is to apply NGSS science and engineering practices, disciplinary core idea, and crosscutting concepts to investigating the way in which EV3 sensors work. Students make a claim about how sensors work then must design an investigation to prove they are correct. SEPs used: Questioning Developing models Planning and carrying out an investigation Analyzing and interpreting data Using mathematics Constructing explanations Engaging in argument from evidence Communicating information DCIs addressed for Middle School grades 6-8: ps4-1 Use mathematical representations to describe a simple model for waves that includes how the amplitude of a wave is related to the energy in a wave. ps4-2 Develop and use a model to describe that waves are reflected, absorbed, or transmitted through various materials. ps4-3 Integrate qualitative scientific and technical information to support the claim that digitized signals are a more reliable way to encode and transmit information than analog signals. CCs discussed: Cause and Effect System and System Models Structure and Function Patterns
Objectives:

Students will be able to:
1. Make a claim about how EV3 sensors work, provide evidence for their claim, and explain their reasoning behind the claim.
2. Plan and carry out an investigation about how waves work in sensors.
3. Apply the reliability of their data to the reliability of digitized versus analog signals.
4. Defend claims by presenting data and arguments to peers.
